What Do The NIJ Protection Levels Mean?
Understanding NIJ 0101.06 Armor Protection Levels: Below is a snapshot of select threat projectiles and classifications of armor related to these general threats. Refer to NIJ standard 0101.06 for further details.

NIJ Level IIA
- Protection Capabilities: Designed to stop lower velocity handgun rounds, such as 9mm and .40 S&W.
- Typical Applications: Suitable for lower-threat environments, primarily used for daily law enforcement and security tasks. These blankets are relatively light and suitable for quick deployment.

NIJ Level II
- Protection Capabilities: Capable of stopping higher velocity handgun rounds, such as 9mm FMJ and .357 Magnum.
- Typical Applications: Thicker and heavier than Level IIA, offering better protection, suitable for urban police and security personnel in higher risk environments.

NIJ Level IIIA
- Protection Capabilities: Can stop heavier and higher velocity handgun rounds, including .44 Magnum and .357 SIG.
- Typical Applications: This is the heaviest handgun protection level, suitable for use in potentially high-risk situations such as specific security details or emergency response.

NIJ Level III
- Protection Capabilities: Designed to stop high-velocity rifle rounds, such as 7.62mm FMJ (common ammunition for AK-47).
- Typical Applications: Appropriate for military and tactical situations, as well as any setting where there is a potential threat from rifles. Ballistic blankets at this level are usually heavier and may require multiple persons to handle.

NIJ Level IV
- Protection Capabilities: Capable of stopping armor-piercing bullets, such as .30 caliber armor-piercing rounds.
- Typical Applications: Provides the highest level of protection, suitable for the most extreme threat situations, such as military conflict zones or terrorist attack sites.
